About us

A Refuge of Hope, A Fortress of Learning

Who We Are:? Refuge and Fortress Free School is a Christian faith-based, interdenominational initiative providing shelter and education to children from conflict-affected, less privileged homes. We began as an offshoot of the Refuge and Fortress Center for Traumatized Women and Children – a humanitarian mission to restore hope to those scarred by violence. Seeing the plight of young children in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, our founders were moved to create a safe haven specifically for the littlest survivors of religious unrest. With support from local missionaries, we identified families in crisis and obtained parental consent to bring their children into our care. In our first year, we opened our doors to 20 children from Kaduna and Benue who had lost homes and stability due to communal violence.

Our Story

From a humble start in a rented facility, Refuge and Fortress has grown into a lifeline for families seeking peace. Our school is officially registered as a non-profit with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission, underscoring our commitment to transparency and good governance. Many of our children arrived timid and fearful, having witnessed violence no child should see. But here they have found laughter, friendship, and hope again. By addressing both practical needs (shelter, food, education) and emotional needs (counseling, stability, love), we empower these children to overcome the past. Our ultimate goal is to see them grow into compassionate leaders who will uplift their communities and foster peace, fulfilling the vision that sparked this project.

Our Vision

To raise successful, responsible, and globally relevant citizens from among Nigeria’s less privileged children — children who, despite the challenges of their birth and the circumstances of their homes, families, and environments, can rise into giants of influence and impact.

  • To provide free, heigh quality education that strengthens the academic, moral, and social foundation of every child.
  • To nurture balanced growth — intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and socially — during the most formative year of life.
  • To equip children with the confidence, discipline, values and skills needed to thrive in today’s world.
  • To ensure that every child, regardless of the difficult reality of their birth or background, is given the opportunity to flourish. 
  • To develop character, responsibility, and patriotism, preparing them to become productive citizens of Nigeria.
  • To mentor, guide, and inspire them into becoming great mind for global impact.

Refuge and Fortress School is not merely providing shelter and schooling but it is intentionally developing these boys and girls as complete human beings – intellectually, morally, creatively, socially and technologically.
Young minds are being shaped for knowledge, creativity, problem solving and technological competence.
